The gaming accessory manufacturing giant will be unveiling a smartphone weeks from now. Having the motto “for gamers. By gamers” people have insane expectations for it. And so naturally there is a lot of speculation about its features. The phone which the company claims will cater to hardcore gamers was spotted on GFXbench. And if the features mentioned there are to be believed, then we can safely say that Razer wasn’t kidding when they said that this will be a hardcore gaming phone. The phones boast of an 8gb RAM which is as much as a macbook pro! Works on android os and has a resolution 2560*1440 on a 5.7-inch screen which is ideal for gaming. It will sport an 8mp front camera and a 12mp back camera. An internal memory of 64gb which is a standard feature for flagship phones. The feature which makes it really standout from the crowd is the 8gb RAM. But as already mentioned this is all a mere speculation, a rumour which at this point seem very plausible. Razer which started out as a gaming accessory manufacturing company in 1998, has been expanding their horizons. In 2015 they stepped in the wearable tech market with products ranging from fitness bands to VR headsets. Through the years the company has achieved a cult status in gaming community. Razer is probably one of the very few billion-dollar companies which the general public isn’t aware of. Tan, the company’s founder/CEO said “What differentiates us from everyone else is that we are hyper-focused on the gamer. They have an incredibly strong influence on technology.” Razer acquired the smartphone company Nextbit earlier this year to enter the smartphone market. But this is a good step by Razer because as of right now smartphone is practically non-existent. Nobody seems to take smartphone gaming seriously and with good reason. The most played game on smartphone is candy crush saga which for serious gamers doesn’t even qualify as a game. The main underlying reason for this is because nobody actually pays for these games thanks to online piracy nobody needs to pay. Almost all mobile games can be found on other forums on the internet where the user doesn’t have to pay. The only profitable mobile gaming model is freemium model. It is basically a business model in which the basic features are free but the advanced features are paid. That is why now even developers aren’t focussing on mobile gaming. Plus, all standard smartphones are touchscreen which can’t compare to the gaming experience of a keyboard or controller with physical buttons. This is where I am expecting the razer smartphone will come to people’s aid by equipping a smartphone with necessary tools for gaming. Razer’s product will need to have some really ground-breaking features. And competitive pricing is a must for them or else it will end up being a collector’s item for hardcore Razer fans. Mobile gaming can be a huge market if explored properly and if razer delivers then this will be the first step towards the revival of smartphone gaming.
