A while ago, Amazon was offering some big discounts on its various Alexa speakers which led to an overwhelming response by the buyers. All these speakers went out of stock among which was the second-generation Amazon Echo Dot. This little speaker through its looks, itself redefines perfection and contains all the power of Amazon Alexa in it to deliver high performance for extensive use. This small device could be placed anywhere in a room out of sight without being noticed due to its small size.
The Christmas stock of the Echo Dot was sold out well before Christmas leaving its fans with no option but to wait for the stock to replenish and be available again soon. Well that wait is over now. Echo Dot is finally back in stock and is ready to be shipped as soon as an order is placed.
“Alexa” is Amazon’s cloud-connected, voice-activated virtual assistant like Siri. You wake her up by saying her name i.e. “Alexa” or by saying one of your two other wake word options, “Amazon” or “Echo.” Echo Dot contains an array of microphones inside which keeps on listening always. When they hear the wake word, they start recording whatever you say next and send it off to Amazon’s servers through cloud. These Amazon servers figure out what you are saying/asking for and then tell Alexa how to respond. All of this happens in about a second.
WHAT ALL CAN IT DO?
Being a hands-free, voice-controlled device, it uses Alexa to perform various tasks. One of them is play music. It can stream music from Amazon Prime Music, Pandora and Spotify. It can even play podcasts from iHeartRadio or TuneIn. It can also be used to control smart home devices, provide information, read the news headlines from any source you like, set alarms etc. It can hear us from across the room with 7 far-field microphones even while playing music or in noisy environment. It can also connect to speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5 mm stereo cable.
ECHO DOT GETS SMARTER ITSELF
Thanks to an increasingly stable market of third-party voice apps called “skills” that Echo Dot keeps on getting smarter itself. There are over 3,000 of them at this point, and each one teaches Alexa a new trick. The Uber and Lyft skills let you tell Alexa to call you a ride. To tell Alexa to make a credit card payment is taught to it by Capital One skill. The Domino’s skill lets you tell Alexa to order a pizza. A skill called The Wayne Investigation lets you talk your way through an exciting mystery set. You can browse through them all in the Alexa app, then pick which ones you want to enable. You can also just ask Alexa to turn one on by saying something like, “Alexa, enable the Uber skill.” And, as of now, none of them cost anything.
The specifications of Amazon’s Echo Dot shows it was no surprise that it went out of stock so early before Christmas. The good thing is that it is now back in stock and the wait is now finally over!
